Antique American Oil on Canvas Portrait Attributed to Joseph Whiting Stock circa 1838 - 1843

Inscribed on back of frame "Susan Russell daughter of Benj. C. Ward" and inscribed on stretcher "Susan Ward of New Bedford, Mass circa 1838 wife of a Sea Captain. Sold by Mrs. Hawkes Sandwich, Mass."

Joseph Whiting Stock, an itinerant portrait painter from Springfield, Massachusetts, is known- from his own journal- to have have painted in New Bedford from 1842-1843. At this time the city was a thriving, wealthy, whaling port. Susan K. (Ward) Russell died 1905, and is buried in Rural Cemetary in New Bedford. Her father Benjamin C. Ward died 1877 in New Bedford. The 1860 Federal census shows Susan K. Russell and Benjamin C. Ward living in West New Bedford. This portrait is in untouched, estate condition with original frame.
