a harbor scene by Frank Wilbert Stokes (1858 - 1955).
Frank W. Stokes was a famous
polar explorer who documented his expeditions with artworks and writings.
He took part in Admiral Peary's Greenland expeditions in 1892 and 1893-
1894, the Amundsen Ellsworth
Antarctic Expedition of 1901, and the Swedish Nordenskjold South Polar Expedition
of 1902. A large collection of his works are in the Smithsonian Museum of
American Art. This scene could be from the Cape Ann region of Massachusetts.
