Signed in foreground on rock "B C" and titled in pencil on the back of the stretcher "Mt. Mansfield- Vermont." The stretcher also bears the paper label "of P. ULRICH, 116 Fourth Avenue, near 12th Street, DEPOT OF ALL KINDS OF ARTISTS' MATERIALS". The frame is not original.
by Benjamin Champney, considered by many to be the Father of the White Mountain School of art. Champney mentions trips to Vermont in 1853 and in the 1860's in his autobiography "Sixty Years' Memories of Art and Artists."
This view of Mount Mansfield, the highest peak in Vermont, would today show the slopes of Stowe Ski Resort.
