Antique American Valance Board

Meant to hide the top of a window treatment such as a Venetian blind, this New York paint decorated valance board dates to about 1820 - 1840. Gilt and black stencil decoration border a landscape scene depicting a gentleman with a tri-corner hat, a Dutch style house, lake or river with sailboats, rugged mountains, a large willow tree, and the ruins of an old Dutch church with gothic arches. The paint is green and black with gilding, on a poplar board.
