Pair Antique
American Hand Held Copper Lanterns
Fantastic true
pair of early Nineteenth century copper lanterns in excellent estate condition.
These semicircular lamps have their original semicircular, removable burners,
still in useable condition. The handles on the back of the lamps and on
the front of the fonts are adjustable (fold in or out). There are star
shaped air vents at bottom and top. The glass pane doors lock with an
up and down sliding rod. One ingenious construction technique seen here
is the tapered wall of the reservoir; the semicircular wall of the reservoir
flares outward, which serves to tightly fit under a soldered protrusion
on the inside back wall of the lantern. The front, flat edge of the resevoir
fits tightly to the closed and locked door, resulting in a very stable,
forward looking, and easily carried flashlight!
As you can see
from the photos, I have made no attempt to clean these lanterns, even including
the glass. As this rare pair has not been touched in generations, I simply
didn't want to be the first. I'll leave it up to the buyer to decide on the
level of patina to keep. From
a local Barnstable estate.
