Pine Dressing Table
Circa 1820 - 1830, probably Providence, Rhode Island
Signed by the maker: "M D Stow", "Made By
M D Stow", and "Sartition"
Moses Dresser Stow was born 1804 in Charlton, Mass., listed
as a Providence cabinetmaker in 1826, died 1882, and is buried in East Greenwich
Cemetary.
Scrolled backsplash over three small drawers stepped
back over two larger drawers. Scrolled skirt. Ovolo corners and turned legs.
Mahogany knobs. Bowed front. Possibly originally painted white with gold highlights.
The inscriptions are hidden from view, but can be seen by removing the top
section.
"Sartition" might be a misspelling of sortition,
and could be a politically motivated inscription or a notation indicating
that the piece was meant to be sold by lottery, perhaps by The New England
Charitable Mechanics Association.
