Lowhead Black Duck Decoy

Circa late 19th or very early 20th century

This "snugglehead" decoy is probably from Toronto or the St. Clair Flats region. It's very close in form to birds by and/or attributed to George and James Warin, prominent Toronto, Ontario sportsmen and boat builders. It's a solid body bird with glass eye (one missing) and a natural cork plug in the bottom. The weight is gone, but its eight-shaped shadow shows its form. The anchor attachment is an old replacement. The underside of the tail shows original scratch painting. The bill is outlined with a chisel, and carved on the underside.
