Antique American "Loomer"
Slat Goose Decoy
Attributed to maker R. H.
of Duxbury, Massachusetts; the inside breastboard is signed by a chisel-carved,
partially conjoined "R (backwards) H DUX." The great, late collector
Dr. George Ross Starr, Jr. of Duxbury had two Canada geese carvings by Roger
Howland (also from Duxbury) in his collection, but this was an unillustrated
lot in the Bourne catalog of sale, and I have not been able to make a connection
between this loomer and Roger Howland.
Original condition except
for one replaced slat on the starboard side near the back. Circa late 19th
- early 20th century. 19" high by 34" long by 11 3/4" wide.
