These two black duck decoys are rigmates, apparently from the Dunnville,
Ontario area. They are solid-bodied and retain their original keels with
convenient notches for winding on the anchor lines. Also, the keels have
shadows showing the position and style of the (missing) lead weights. One
has a relaxed head, slightly turned, and the other has a more alert head,
turned even more. They retain their original paint and glass eyes. Rasp
marks are obvious. Gouged channels delineate feathers on the back and rump.
Both are lightly struck by shot. The more alert bird has a check in the
back- see overhead photo.
The distinctive gouging in the back combined with the rasping and overall
styling leads me to believe they were made in the Dunville area by Ken Anger
or one of his contemporaries or predecessors.
