Nesting Set of Eight White-Wing
Scoter Decoys by Joseph W. Lincoln of Accord, Hingham, Massachusetts
Called shadows or silhouettes,
each pair of decoys is connected by incrementally longer pairs of slats
so the group can nest together for storage. When in use, the first pair
is anchored and the subsequent pairs are strung out behind. This group is
attributed to Joe Lincoln (1859 - 1938), one of the greatest decoy carvers
of his time. Lincoln probably would have called these "coots"
- one of his high-output subjects. He also made coots canvas covered, self-bailing,
and solid bodied. These coots are nailed to the slats. Also, each decoy
has two dowels run through from top to bottom, presumably to prevent warpage,
breakage, or splitting. Such attention to detail points to professional
quality. This workmanship proved its worth as these decoys have been shot
over (and at!) many times and survived with only a small piece missing under
one bill. The owner liked them enough to fill shot-holes and give them working
repaint.
